The Role Of Photography in Social Media

A few months ago, Facebook announced a redesign of its look. It was not the first time the social networking site has done so, and every time, millions of users would rant and moan, to no avail.

The redesign went pretty smoothly. One of the new features of the network’s new look is the introduction of “theater view.” Meaning that every time a user would browse through pictures, the background of the nearby area would turn black, helping to create a better viewing experience.

Facebook did not work on this change simply for better looks. It has realized that with photographers worldwide taking advantage of the low price of  digital memory cards and the availability of accessories like the Cannon digital camera battery people simply take more pictures. And the need to share them is greater than ever. Facebook wants to tap into the Flickr niche market and be able to be the storage place for all of their users photos. And it may be working. Think about it. How many pictures of yourself do you actually have as files on your computer? How many are in facebook’s cloud? Something to think about as the site becomes larger by the minute.
